The Old-fashioned Black and Tan English Shepherd Association (OBTESA), a Tennessee nonprofit corporation, stands as the only institution acknowledging the existence and significance of the black and tan English shepherd bloodline. This bloodline, documented to exist since at least the 1940s and likely much earlier, has a rich history intertwined with rural Southern traditions.
For about 30 years, this bloodline faced a damaging campaign of negative marketing. Breeders and institutions that did not profit from its existence undermined the black and tans, while their genetic resources were exploited for commercial gain. Other bloodlines prospered while the black and tans suffered. As a result, the black and tan bloodline was nearly pushed to extinction, with an ensuing population bottleneck threatening its survival.
Despite this, OBTESA has emerged as the leading force in reversing this decline. Since our founding, our association has spearheaded efforts to revive and protect the black and tan English shepherd bloodline. Through dedicated conservation and strategic breeding practices, OBTESA has not only brought attention back to this nearly forgotten line but also works to ensure its place in the future of the breed. Our work marks an important turning point in preserving the genetic diversity and historical significance of the black and tan English shepherds, securing their legacy for generations to come.
